IAAF GOLDEN LEAGUE DATES CONFIRMED – 2004 CALENDAR IS ANNOUNCED

    25 November 2003

Monte Carlo - The meeting dates of the 2004 IAAF Golden League have been confirmed along with the rest of the main 2004 competition calendar.

The IAAF Golden League has traditionally started off in Oslo but with a new stadium being built in the Norwegian capital, competition will take place in the city of Bergen when the 2004 six meeting series begins on Friday 11 June.

Rome is the next of Athletics’ premier series of one day meetings to take place on Friday 2 July, followed by Paris (Friday 23 July), and then Zurich (Friday 6 August) which will be the last IAAF outdoor permit meeting of any category to take place prior to the Athens Olympic Games.

Following on from the competition in Athens, Brussels re-starts the 2004 IAAF Golden League on Friday 3 September, with Berlin on Sunday 12 September providing the finale.

IAAF 2004 Golden League events are as follows -

Men - 200m; 800m;1500m; 400m Hurdles; Triple Jump; Discus Throw.

    Women -100m; 400m; 1500m 3000m/5000m; 100m Hurdles; High Jump.

While 2004 will mark the first appearance of the Discus Throw as a Golden League regular, all other events have a history of success in the Golden League. The women’s 100m could mark the return of Marion Jones (Golden League Jackpot winner in 2002) to the most prestigious one-day meeting circuit of the IAAF.

Also Golden League Jackpot winners in 2002, Hicham El Guerrouj (1500m), Felix Sanchez (400m Hurdles) and Ana Guevara (400m) may have their eyes set on yet another jackpot.

Another athlete whose chances to win the IAAF Golden League Jackpot are undeniable is Hestrie Cloete, 2003 Athlete of the Year and nine times at 2.00m or higher this year.

Re: IAAF Confirms Golden League Schedule (long)

The Golden League scheduling is poor. It breaks up the mini-circuits that used to exist, like when Oslo-Stockholm-Finland were all within a week or so of one another.

I couldn't agree more. The #$%&* Olympics totally messes up the GL circuit.
