Davies of Franklin, TN just did this at the AAU JO (young men). This is I assume HS implements or a reasonable approximation thereof. Nice second day for youngster!

I could be wrong, but I'm guessing that there are few events where there is as little correlation between age-group success and making it in the big time than the decathlon.

Yes, I mean look at the HS decathletes who have tried to go to the Olympics. Bob Mathias, Milt Campbell. I recognize that times are different now, and I only take notice of a HS kid if it seems there is something particularly distinctive in his array of talents. In addition to the score, I tend to take notice if it appears that the kid may be able to avoid one of the common weaknesses of a young decathlete--such as the pv, jav, or 1500m, sometimes the hurdles. I take particular notice if it appears likely that the athlete will have no distinctive weaknesses at all. It looks like there is a good chance that both Beach and Davies will fall into that category. They also have potentially good "decathlon speed," if not on the level of a Clay or O'Brien. Add to this the fact that they are HS underclassmen, and I would not dismiss them so easily.
