With over 30 years of experience I've never met an athlete that fits your description. Perhaps you could name one?

    Alan Webb

When was this? Which sponsors and/or promoters have ever pressured him to do ANYTHING he otherwise wouldn't?

I'm sorry I didn't explain myself well enough....thank you for allowing me to clarify...

I don't mean that sponsors and promotors directly pressured him to run. I meant that professional athletes and their managers (in every sport) often feel an obligation to compete. As a result, they may at times attempt to compete when they shouldn't. An obvious example was Beckham a couple of weeks ago.

Athletes and managers want to fulfill their obligations. Sometimes even when it is not in their best interest to do so. This is part of a series of problems that Webb encounted last year.

From a Letsrun interview....Flynn said Webb was a "little injured" heading into the Adidas Track Classic 2 mile, and that Webb further injured himself a week later at Prefontaine. Of course the problems didn't end at Prefontaine.

If they knew he was a "little injured" before Adidas why did he run there? And when things went very poorly in Carson why in the world would he run "Pre" the following week? And, when things were obviously not going well why did he continue to run poorly (1:50 800 meters) a few weeks later. It is commendable that he fulfilled his obligations unfortunately he wasn't able to fulfill the obligations for the late summer runs.....his season fizzled in a flash.

I am glad that if he had a twinge in the hamstring this year that they were smart enough to pull the plug on London rather than risk a repeat of '06. Of course, I think his performances this year allow him a bit more clout.

We're hearing that the "injury" wasn't/isn't particularly serious and all is going well. No more races before Osaka at this point, of course.

Don't know; as posited on an earlier thread, in terms of body-clock change one might be better to stay in Europe.
