13.12 from 2006, so not a huge PR.

Yes, an absolutely monstrous 0.03 improvement! The change from 10ths to 100ths has made a mockery of wehat constitutes a major sprint PR.

In the hand days, chopping 0.1 off your time was notable; 0.2 was huge, 0.3 was monstrous.

Anyone know why Ryan Wilson has no sponsorship?

forgive tim hutchings commentating for eurosport - he's got a distance background so may not be too familiar with sprinters' pbs

Good run for Aries. He's been stuck in the 13.2s for most of the season

My impression is the "13.2s" have been few and far between for Merritt. Hope he's returned to his very fine form from last year. Too bad it's too late for Osaka.

I, too, am glad to see the 2004 World Junior Champ make a big breakthrough.
I wouldn't call it a "monstrous" PB, but it was a very good PB and really vaults him into serious contender status.

                    Merritt's progression of SBs
                    2006 13.12 1.1 Lausanne 11 07 2006
                    2005 13.38 0.9 Nashville, TN 15 05 2005
                    2004 13.47 1.2 Austin, TX 11 06 2004

His previous PB at 600m of altitude with a 1.1 tailwind actually converts to a "basic" 13.23, whereas his 13.09 was with nearly zero wind (0.1) and nearly sea level (60m). Thus, the performance leap is closer to approximately 0.13 ~ 0.14 ...

Not to go around picking on you today because of your braindead comments about the LJ GOAT, but now I'm confused. Having a 0.03 PR in a distance event is more significant than a 0.03 PR in a sprint??

PBs for each athlete are listed in the press materials the journalists get before the meet (and on startlists, in most cases). The commentators cannot be expected to actually memorize PBs of all athletes, but they should know where to look them up.
