  • Macharia Yuot Becomes U.S. Citizen

Macharia Yuot, the former D-III star for Widener and one of Sudan's "Lost Boys", became a U.S. citizen last Thursday in Philadelphia. He ran his first race as an American last Sunday at the NYC Half-Marathon.

    Awesome!!

Just reminds me that Bernard Lagat is a USA citizen too!! Hope he does well in Osaka in 1500 and/or 5000!! Would love to see Bernard get at least one WC or OG gold wearing red, white & blue!! :!:

I haven't heard of this guy (Yuot, I mean -- not Lagat, who is referenced just above). Anyone have at hand any data on his best performances, etc? Thanks!

Mooch won DIII Individuals at XC and was several times over the National Champion in Outdoor track, most notably a 5k/10k/3kSC triple in 2006. For those of us on the DIII scene, Mooch is a great athlete and a very humble and pleasant character as well.

            Not exactly earth-shattering...

Fair enough. But an inspiring story and by all accounts an incredibly nice guy. And those DIII performances (particularly from someone as dominant as Yuot was) can be misleading. Witness Nick Symmonds, Andrew Rock dropping big chunks of time once faced with consistent higher-level competition.

And he just ran 1:06 for the half-marathon, and is (I think) qualified for the Trials marathon.

Yes, he's qualified for the Trials with 2:21:42 at Grandma's in June. After his NCAA D-III XC win last November, he got on a bus and rode all the way back to Philly from Cincy. The next morning he took sixth in the Philadelphia Marathon (2:25). Tough, or maybe just hard-headed--at times it's difficult to tell the difference.

This is a good intro to his story:
