when he ran his 1407 for 5k and 21659 for the marathon he himself said he was 7 years younger than the birth date iaaf has for him. my question is then why does the iaaf not change his birth date? nevertheless even if he is 45 that is still great under the conditions as is mbarek hussein in his 40's getting 21st. i think ayele would know his age better than the iaaf. but at my age and in a mid life crises and state of denial, i want to believe 52 year olds can accomplish these performances

Shami Mubarak is formerly Richard Yatich of Kenya and I believe the other Qatari in the race is Simon Cherono.

                    • I see one of the guys with one of those ridiculous nasal strips didn't finish.

                      • Interesting story about Douglas Wakkihuri, the last Kenyan to win the WC marathon. Wakiihuri won in Rome in 1987, and had lived most (all?) of his athletic life in Japan.

                        • Not that there's any comparison, due to conditions, but isn't this the first instance of a men's winning mark, in WC or OG, being short of the existing women's WR?(by 34 sec.!) ..not to mention, also being :43 behind Bikila's [barefoot!] time at Rome 1960!!

                          • Stuttgart '93 was a pretty slow marathon as was Tokyo '91

                            • Someone on another board is making the ridiculous argument that maybe out best marathoner should have gone because his pb would have placed him 2nd. Someone did an analysis of how far off their pbs everyone ran(and the analysis doesn't factor in the fact that 37.23% of the field didn't even finish). Apparently the flags are somehow screwed up.

Average is supposed to be 10.1%
