So the prognostication is for the Bekele brothers to score the double (5 and 10).

I'm pretty confident that such a familial achievement is unprecedented at the same World Champs...

Very curious to see what kind of pace they go out at. No heats but there's heat. Will Tad try to break Bekele ala world X. It wont be that oppressive, right?

Here are a few details on these ****:

          Martin Mathathi
          27:08pb
          2005 wc 10k 5th
          2006 wxc 3rd
          http://www.iaaf.org/athletes/athlete%3D194623/
          2nd at Kenyan trials race

          Josphat Kiprono Menjo
          27:04pb
          3rd at Kenyan trials race

          Josephat Ndambiri
          27:04pb
          1st at kenyan trials race

Looking at Kenya's 2006 & 2007 performance lists for 10k, there are three guys with sub 27 (E Kipchoge, M Mosop, M Kogo) in these two seasons, then these guys (& a few others) in the 27:03-27:10 range. So, while these aren't the hypothetical Kenyan A-team, they are near the top of the Kenyan lists for this and last year, and they did qualify for the race. Who knows, they might do OK.

After what happened in Mombassa I wonder if Z. Tadesse will push the pace in order to make Bekele deal with the humidity early? An easy pace like the Women's will just play into Ethiopia's hands.

I believe this is the second "broke-dick" disparagement in one session from you Mr. E. Clean up the act or spend the rest of the meet on the sidelines. Thanks.

Edit: Never mind, jeremyp made the same point. Anyway, I'm only almost certain Bekele will win the 10000 meters now after watching the Osaka conditions.

Interesting to note that there is not a single European in the 10,000. Doesn't bode well for the health of the sport.

But there is young Galen Rupp, who raced fairly well against some of these guys at the WJC 2004. He's had an amazing season and would not surprise me too much if he pulled off a "Kara Goucher-style" medal run.

He would surprise me beyond all measure if he could do that (but I was absolutely shocked by Goucher's medal as well).

Looks like my guess on how Tadesse would push the pace was right. Will humidity/heat play a factor??

Tadesse is leading but not really pushing the pace...27.16 pace, he has to throw in some 63's, or Bek will do it soon.

Nobody taking any drinks but that doesn't mean they're not hurting a bit. Still look comfortable though.
