  • Coach of the Year? Brauman?

Whatever happens I've thoroughly enjoyed this WC. Some athletes have been heralded others have been ridiculed. But what about the men and women that are pulling the strings. Lance Brauman's work has to be recognised - he is likely to haul 8 medals from this championship, has so far guided the 100m world champions ... with a powerful presence in the 200m and 4*100 relays... has to be the most successful coach here.

Where are the historians...? Who are the great coaches in World championships and Olympic track and field history and what were their medal count?

    Why?
The public focuses on the athletes.
Athletes will gravitate toward successful coaches. That's as it should be. Athletes know who the best coaches are, and seek them out.
Coaches don't need to be up on the victory stand. And I think coaches (most of them) understand that, and do not seek the public eye.

Interesting comment in the times a few days ago. Says braumans either proved to be the best coach in the world or completely irrelevant.

To be fair though, campbell and gay worked to his instructions so a certain amount of credit goes to him . Yet you can speculate as to how successful they would have been under say john smith. I think I would suggest keeping clear of trevor graham and charlies francis for obvious reasons.

        Naive.

Are you a coach? I dont know of any coach that want to be on the Podium, but show me one that doesnt want some recognition for his efforts. In TG's interview he dedicated his win to his coach. In quite a few countries i know the top/national coaches are recognised. Coaches in Soccer/Football other sports enjoy cult status. In england some coaches/manager's are regarded as more valueable than the players. It would do the sport no harm if the support staff get a pat on the back every now and then.

I'm wondering how hypocritical it would be of me to agree that Brauman is an exceptional coach, while I seem to be so critical of Coe.

Maybe you should reconsider on Coe . . .

Clyde Hart's athletes have won a few medals over the years.

I'll be back in about four hours with a medal count!

Unless someone else beats me to it.

                Anybody get more than 22?

Outdoor WC only is what I counted. I'm sure I missed some.

                  Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.

Try Li Li--or James Li, as he has called himself once in the US.

Forget the medal count for a bunch of sprinters--the US has always had a wealth of those athletes. Try a career-long quality of work that just ended 99 years of an American shortcomings in a globally popular event.

Is Li the same guy who coached the great American, Mark Plaatjes to a 1993 World Championship in the Marathon (USA 2:13:57)? (I know, I know; that's not politically correct.)
Another thing Lagat and Plaatjes have in common is neither one of them can ever become a U.S. President.

                      I don't understand your point.

The "globally popular event" I mentioned is the one Lagat just won: the 1500m.--something no American has done for 99 years, according to the front page link to an SI article.

Nobody's talking about the marathon; Shorter won Olympic gold in 1972, Meb silver and Kastor bronze in 2004. [Plus Schul in the 5,000m. and Mills in the 10,000m., both gold, in 1964.] And Marianne Dickerson took silver in the very first Worlds marathon.

Or are you just making some old and tired crappy comment about Lagat not "really" being American because he was born elsewhere...?

Any of the experts check out Coach Hart's numbers? A lot of people are calling him the greatest 400m coach of all-time. How does James Li stack up against him?

                            He doesn't.
But Li should be given proper respect for the extraordinary meet Lagat had. Let's not tarnish his moment by a silly comaprison to a living legend. Unfair camparisons set good people up for negative criticisms in the form of honest debate.

Hart/Wariner, Brauman/Gay & Campbell & Spearman, Li/Lagat. All of these people should be given huge kudos for their terrific WC performances.

Another coach worthy of recognition at the Worlds - Jerry Clayton of Auburn. He coached high jump winner Donald Thomas, deca silver Maurice Smith and disc 5th Gabor Mate among the few he had in Osaka.

Note too that Lance Brauman is an Auburn grad.

By my rough count Auburn also led all American universities in the number of current or past athletes performing in Osaka! War Eagle!
