  • Text on HS T&F participation

The story on the Front Page on the Marathon Trials has this:

USA Track & Field (USATF) is the National Governing Body for track and field, long-distance running and race walking in the United States. USATF encompasses the world's oldest organized sports, the most-watched events of Olympic broadcasts, the #1 high school and junior high school participatory sport and more than 30 million adult runners in the United States.

The data from malmo indicated that soccer had shot past T&F. Maybe girls soccer is behind enough, but I doubt it. Do they not count JH soccer (mainly club) while counting JH T&F? Are they adding in XC, with a lot of double counting? Or have they not updated the text in five years or more.

Track and Field is not cross country.

I believe that football then basketball has the highest participation rates

    Football, over 1 million
    Basketball, over 500,000
Track and Field combined boys and girls comes to 900,000

Why unfortunately? It is more American than any other sport, even though the graphic has nothing to do with the thread.

However, if you indoor T&F there are another 110,000 or so, which might be slightly above football. Using the reference from malmo we see that

Sport School Year Boys Schools Girls Schools Boys Participation Girls Participation
              Track and Field-Outdoor 2004-05 15,294 15,213 516,703 428,198

              Track and Field-Indoor . 2004-05 . 2,295 . 2,220 ..56,626 .51,878

so here we get about 1,053,000, but this is a double counting of the same people indoors and out.

Football has 6,8 and 9 man football trump cards they can play if needed.

It was a valiant effort to jimmy the stats, though.

Let me spell it out for you. It's an E-A-S-I-E-R G-R-A-P-H-I-C because you don't have to click the sports individually. All sports, all stats, on one page. Whatever sport is hosting the page is immaterial.

                  Understand?

Hothead, the D-A-T-A T-A-B-L-E was appreciated. The Lacrosse G-R-A-P-H-I-C wasn't germane.
