  • Fast indoor sprinting in October!

Asian Indoor Games in Macau, 30 Oct, indoors:

    60m
6.54 Samuel Francis (Qatar, NR) (6.55 sf)
6.56 Yahya Al-Kahes (Saudi Ariabia, NR)
    6.65 Wachara Sondee )Thailand, =NR)

So much for Francis not having a world class 60 time (see Pickering thread...).

Francis didn't have fast indoor time for same reason most Qataris don't: "indoors, what is this word indoors?"

This was indeed his first ever venture indoors.

The Asian record is 6.51 by a Qatari, Talal Mansoor, from 1993.

Oddly, Samuel's next quote was, "Qatar, where is this place Qatar?"

There was a story linked on the front page here a few weeks ago suggested that Francis is more of a Ramzi-style economic migrant than a Shaheen-style "recruit".

Is there any chance we can just talk about his sprinting rather than what passport he happens to be carrying? No? I thought not.

I find the 'gun for hire' discussions interesting ALSO. I gather you don't?

By your own admission you find everything interesting!

Of course it is, in its time and place. It's just saddens me that the first responses to a very speedy time by a guy who looks a serious prospect were jibes. And as mentioned, it seems that the "gun for hire" expression isn't accurate here either.

lets not be callous with the characterizations... Show diligence and use the term: gun for rent....

PS: Great to see the various "asian" national records advancing.
... nothing really ever changes my friend, new lines for old, new lines for old.

looking at how long ago that was set, he may actually have been an "real" asian ?

                    Indeed, a native Qatari.

indicates that there is potential "native" <10 talent in middle-east

6.51 if he couda held on "superbly" back then, is ~ 10.02 basic, which with nice wind shouda got him down to ~ <9.95

Mansoor was a world-class sprinter. He was fifth in his semi-final over 100m at the 1992 Olympic Games and I think he won a bronze medal at the 1993 World Indoors.

Not to take this precisely down the road you were trying to ignore, what does "native Qatari" mean for Mansour? Do we know really where he was born? It's not in the Olympic archive. I can't imagine that the importation of labor hasn't existed there (as in all countries) for decades.
