  • So Who Gets Marion's Medals?

IOC saying "no automatic upgrades"; see story on front page

    gh,
idle questions related to this "medal-return" issue -- when MJ or anyone returns/returned medals, to whom are/were they actually returned? USOC? IOC? I presume there are not ample precedents for this.

Jones' medals were returned by her attorneys to the USOC, who have/will return them to the IOC.

So if 2nd place is deemed dirty and denied inheriting the gold but 3rd place is not, then does 3rd place now move up and own a co-silver medal?

I'd like to see Masback march her to the front doors of her relay teammates to retrieve the medals in person.

Given the depth of this problem, this could get more complicated than the Olympic Team selection criteria. Who's on first. What's on second. I don't know. THIRD BASE!

I have heard them say something about promoting 4th to a Bronze (and, implicitly, leaving the rest alone).

I don't really care who gets the medals - although I would like the Queen to get her umpteenth bronze - but I do think it's going to be great fun watching IOC/IAAF sort out the mess.

I hold them entirely responsible for not sorting this mess out years ago so deserve the complete PR disaster that this case is going to be whatever the outcome.

I'm talking about Thanou not Maz. The problem isn't disqualifying Maz it's who they have to award her medals to.

If the IAAf had made a concerted effort to catch the most obvious of drug cheats a long time before Athens then we maybe we wouldn't have the problem we do. Having said that if they'd actually done something about Marion rather than waiting for the FBI to do the job for them this all could have been over and done with long ago and not be the biggest athletics story in the run up to Beijing

I like this idea -- I wish there were some sort of inverse of the medal awards ceremony, where the person has to face the persons who were cheated.

What combination of violation of due process and and ignoring other nation's laws are you suggesting might have worked best?

I can't see any positives in this situation. I think I'd probably prefer it if they disqualify the cheats and leave the rest as is. Of course that may rob a genuine athlete out of a medal which is totally unfair, but prevents the fiasco of awarding a medal to someone who is then also disqualified.

I simply don't know what would be the best way to resolve this conundrum, and that is just...sad.
