a few questions regarding TnF's ranking system:

if cross country is removed from consideration, why is indoor track used? should they not be considered equally?

and is this used solely to determine an athlete's rank in an individual event or may it be used in the overall AOY rankings?

    Good point.

I mean, it's not like cross-country athletes are an entirely different bunch of athletes. They're the same runners we see on the track, but they're just competing on a different surface. Granted, some athletes tend to excel more at cross country (and road, for that matter), but the same can be applied to indoors - same athletes, different surface, different bunch of results.

If indoor races and competitions are included, then why aren't cross country and road...??

Let me try a wild guess, but isn't indoor TRACK & FIELD still TRACK & FIELD, and CC/road is NOT? Formula I fans don't consider NASCAR a cognate.

but, how can javelin throwers compete for AOY honours when all others have an unfair advantage of an extra season?

How can you have an indoor field, then...??

Exactly. If runners, SP'ers and jumpers are "allowed" to have the 'indoor-advantage' for AOY ranking terms, then why aren't long-distance runners "allowed" to have the 'grass-and-road-advantage' also...??

An interesting note about the AOY awards:

of the 44 Mens AOY TnF has awarded, only 17 of those have been awarded to single-event athletes.

on the womens side, 7 out of 29 AOY awards have been given to single event athletes.

Re: to: mr e. garry hill re: world rankings

T&F News should revert to rankings based strictly on outdoor performances and sans Cross Country of course. Perhaps T&F News could publich a top 5 world ranking per event from indoors,in April, to appease the desire to include indoor performances in their annual rankings.
I will never buy into the concept that an indoor LJ is 100% equivalent to an outdoor LJ.

I was told that that one is actually "fouled", as in a 'fouled deck', i.e. rope lines that crossed each other and caused problems.
