    Webster says it doesn't enter the language until 1941, when there was certainly a minimal amount of rigging to be concerned with aboard ship.

      My websters says "fouled" but I think we all know what the normal reference is. My dad, who was in WW2, told me when I was a kid it was a military term as that was the norm in warfare...usually complete chaos.

      Quick dogpile search also brought up: Southern Nevada Ale Fermentors Union...think I'll avoid their brews!

        You may be right, gh, but when I was on a carrier for a while in the 70's, there were plenty of lines all over the place and we talked about a fouled deck as being unready to accept incoming sorties.
