Steve Prefontaine's parents, Ray & Elfriede, aren't doing too well. Both are pretty much house-bound in Coos Bay, and they've both had a very rough year, health-wise. They have always enjoyed hearing from people for whom Pre made a difference. If anyone cares to email me your memories of Pre, I'll make sure Ray & Elfriede get the messages. Once upon a time, Elfriede would have responded to each and every note, but now is almost completely blind, so she will be unable to acknowledge your message. But you can be sure your good wishes will be appreciated by both Ray & Elfriede, and the rest of the Prefontaine family. (If you'd prefer to send a card, mail it c/o Tom Jordan to Box 10825, Eugene, OR 97440.)

Re: Pre's Parents
Here's a little experience two close friends of mine shared with me. It happened about 8-9 years ago.
They were touring through Oregon, Washington, Northern CA and had long planned to go by Coos Bay to see the place where Pre grew up. Upon arriving in Coos Bay they figured they'd might as well give it a shot and stopped at a pay phone and called Pre's parents. They were invited to stop by and chat. After several hours of conversation, refreshments, and a jar of homemade jam for the road, they had to be on their way.

Re: Pre's Parents
Tom:
I don't know if you remember me, but I spoke with you last year at the USATF meeting in KC. I was with John Capriotti. I'm the guy that has original letter from Pre to Jaako organizing the Finnish tour. I have it framed with the SI cover. You had asked me to send you a digital picture of it so you could send it to Linda for reasons I won't post on a public board. I have completely forgotten to do it, and I sincerely apologize for that. I will do that ASAP, but I may not be able to get it out until after Christmas.
Tell Ray and Elfriede that I have them in my thoughts and prayers.

Re: Pre's Parents
Dear Mrs & Mrs. Prefontaine,
Happy Holidays to you both. Pre was one of a kind and before his time. He was a true pioneer for insuring that the athletes received
their just financial awards from all of the governing bodies. He was a great athlete and will
never be forgotten. My prayers are with you.
God bless.
