  • Hall of Shame...

Watching the National Track and Field Hall of
fame list, I am really amazed to note that the
name of such a fantastic champion like Calvin
    SMITH stands nowhere...
This multi-World and Olympic medalist, this
ex-WR of the most prestigious T&f event (9"93
100m in 1983), this great example of fair-play,
respect, this incredibly nice ambassador of a
fraternal T&Field lost since the heroic times
    of amateurism...
    What a shame!
I just hope the mistake will be rectified very
    soon.

We came into Indy quite a few years ago for a meet, and I was the volunteer greeter who met his flight and then drove him to his hotel. Was very friendly and down to earth. Good guy.

typical typo... HE came into Indy, not "we".

Good posting about Calvin Smith on an earlier thread asking where he was.....

Bud Greenspan did a great piece on him in 16 days of Glory from the '88 games about how he was denied a place on the medal stand because they never had another medal ceremony after he was given the bronzewhen Johnson was disqualified.

The piece ended "Calvin Smith...always gave more to the sport than he ever got in return..."

So true...if it is any consolation....He is MY favorite sprinter fo all time!

          Re: Hall of Shame...

go to the USATF web site, download a nomination form, and NOMINATE HIM if it upsets you that he's not in there!

very simple to do it, so... just do it

            Nominate him?
            Yes, of course!
That is a good idea to nominate a legend...

You are surely correct regarding Calvin Smith, but going a bit far back (well, OK, more than a bit far), how about Fred Wolcott of Rice? Several times NCAA champion in the high as well as low hurdles who broke Jesse Owens world record in the lows and is the only man to hold both the high hurdles and low hurdles world records at the same time. An overwhelming favorite for the 1940 OG, cheated out of that by Adolph and friends. LONG overdue in the Hall of Fame!.

yeah, go vote....they won't "fix" the numbers at all....just like they did with Spike.

Nobidy gets in unless somebody first nominates them, so go to it.
