New test for steroids (see Front Page

Colin Snape, ... said: "Steroids are produced naturally in the body, but they have a different carbon 13/carbon 12 ratios to those that have been introduced illicitly. By refining the measurements of these two isotopes we can produce a very accurate test for the presence of illegal steroids in athletes."

Wouldn't it be feasible to obtain enough mono-isotope carbon to generate steroids that have the same composition of endogenous steroids? It might be quite expensive and require continual titration of a batch.

Actually, C-13 enriched compounds are already available for NMR studies (NMR only sees the C-13). It would be easy to mix up a blend that couldn't be distinguished. I would be shocked if no one is doing this. (They are a little pricy, but not outrageous)

If it has occurred to your minds then either there are major hurdles in the way of this working or it has already been done.
