  • Feud's On!

marknhj pointed out that an IAAF forum thread about this board has started. Typical comment:

"you have to remember US is very insular & athletics gets a virtual zero tv/cable coverage,so they don't get to see the international stars like hitchi/geb etc. & so don't know a lot about them - & it takes a lot of effort to research & be familiar with someone you may have never seen on tv outside a WC or OG!"

Are we gonna take that, boys (and girl)?! What we need is a good ol' fashioned international knock-down-drag-out! Post something really mean like they do.

    Re: Feud's On!

When the IAAF first opened up its forum I thought it would be a great vehicle for international discussion about the sport. I've been very disappointed. I go in there every few months just to see what's going on, and every time I do, I see no reason to return on a regular basis.

Yes, some of our threads are puerile. But so are some of theirs. On the good side, though, I haven't seen much there that can match our better discussions. I am by no means an insular American without an international view of the sport. But our Board is actual quite international, while retaining a natural emphasis on the USA.

I'm very comfortable here and I would just ignore that thread on the IAAF forum. A lot of it is just USA-bashing, which we see too much of both in the world of athletics and the world at large. I don't think it's worth engaging them in a silly debate.

The only difference is that the IAAF discussion group does not degrade into those Michael Lewis vs. "Teenager type" potty mouth rants. Besides that , the bases of the IAAF thread is basically true, to start with the Sport is called Athletics , not Track and Field.

There are only about 6-8 regulars on that site. They are pretty knowledgable and are true fans. However, they're pretty young and juvenile quite often. They certainly do get into the online insult game that we see here every now and then.

No, the sport is track and field. Athletics is a generic word that includes any sport in which you have to use strength, or speed, etc. Look it up. Webster's very clearly defines it as I have.

Why do you call Football , soccer in the uSA? Are people in the USA trying to sock someone? What does IAAF stand for?

May be wrong here but at home isn't the full name of the sport track and field athletics? Certainly it's known as athletics in the UK even though that is not strictly correct in the context of it's origin, which I'm pretty sure was greek and was a generic name for all sports. Took me awhile when I moved here to stop calling it athletics, no one knew what I was talking about. As for football/soccer, it is known as soccer in the UK as well as football.

Saying "Track and Field" still sounds strange to me. If you said you are subscribing to T&F New outside the USA, people would think; Trout and Fish? Tigers and Fur? Tits and Fannies? I have never heard of someone saying they are taking in a "soccer" game in the UK before.

                  There's more than 6-8 regulars!!

                  http://www.iaaf.org/community/forums/Li ... serFilter=

At the moment there's not as many posts, but in the summer (peak T&F season) then there's way more posts... but that's the same with any T&F board.

And by the way, the quote in the original message of this thread was made by an American on the IAAF board!

To be fair, though, the IAAF board has a much broader mix of users (probably because the IAAF doesn't "belong" to just one nation, whereas T&FN kinda "belongs" to USA). Also, I don't know if I'm alone in saying this, but I feel that the IAAF cover a much broader scale of the T&F events.

Of the T&F forums about, this is how I see them:

IAAF Forum - Broad range of events discussed, many different nationalities.

T&FN forum - Fairly broad range of events discussed, strong American vibe.

Sub-10 - Sprint fans, scared of other T&F events. Also home to the Houston McTear fan club.

Sub-20 - Hardcore (mainly American and Canadian) sprint fans. Overspill of Sub-10 forum guys.

LetsRun - Posters don't seem as knowledgable, but enthusiastic nonetheless. Kinda frowned upon by regular posters of the T&FN forum...?

PoleVaultPower - Knowledgable and so enthusiastic, they make the PV look like a separate sport! Many active athletes (albeit not world class) are regular posters.

TheRing - Hardcore throw fans and several well-known athletes.

RunJumpThrow - The future of athletics discussion forums!!! :-D

I agree. More people in the UK will know what "athletics" is, as opposed to "track and field". Same with football - more people know it and call it "football" whereas hardly any UK people call it "soccer" on a regular basis.

Jon...you have a conflict of interest in promoting runjumpthrow don't you? LOL I won't argue the point about how most people refer to the sports in the UK because you're right of course. However the truth bloke was technically incorrect. More interesting though is his referral to "fannies"! That CERTAINLY doesn't have the same meaning over here...belly bags are called fanny packs here! Also as far as I know T&F News is always referred to in the full, unlike AW.

Lol - yeh RunJumpThrow is gonna take me at least another six years to complete! I bought the domain name 'cos it was a gudden! And then came the problem of having to put something there.... I've done all the design work for it, just waiting to get all the content together. I launched the forum just as a place-holder. Hopefully when the actual site is launched, it'll generate more interest!

BTW - so true re: fanny! LMAO

That sounds about right Jon, I would add that the "LetsRun"
group is closer to the active participants, and for the most part they consider the T&F forum uncool. The youthful LetsRun group does have its waste posts, but it is usually kids trying to be funny. The T&F group will have some serious "discussion" , when they disagree it gets very scary with some of the language , ( Michael Lewis posts) and are almost to the point where you think this person is mentally sick.

Letsrun actually has some VERY knowledeable posters. Indeed, when talking about distance running they're better than here. But how can one stomach a board that tolerates threads such as this? (I know, shame on me for reading it)
