  • Charles Dumas has passed away

Just got my morning paper...sadly see that Charles Dumas died of cancer yesterday in Los Angeles; he was only 66.

He was the most beautiful jumper I ever saw.

I was there as a teenager in the L. A. Coliseum when he jumped 7 feet and it was an amazing celebration, especially for a homegrown product from Southern California.

Here is an article that includes a pic of that
        jump.

thanks for the inclusion of that obituary; and that picture says it all. Looks like he's floating. And as an old straddler I still miss the beauty of it.

Brumel's style had a beauty and power of its own but Dumas was "prettier."

The Flop is definitely a better style to achieve higher heights but aesthetically (sp. ?) it's a bummer( IMHO ) compared to the Straddle.

Does anyone have video of either Dumas or Brumel? I don't think I've ever seen them jumping.

(Steve...your spelling is correct, I had to look up "aesthetically" yesterday for a hurdle post!)

For Brumel get the new release of Tokyo Olympiad DVD from Criterion. Lots of, but sadly not all, great track including the high jump with Brumel, Thomas, Rambo etc.
