They are great, but what we would really like is that that don't interfere with the action on the track and in the field. Unfortunately that would necessitate 3-4 hour broadcasts. John Q. likes/needs them, so yeah, we need them.

Bullshit! Track and field is still around because it's a great sport. It's pure competition and it resonates with people who love to see pure competition. Those of us who do, don't care at all about the athletes' personal lives. We appreciate what they do on the track and in their field events. The sport does not need any more than its intrinsic values to survive.

Yes, to do more than survive, it needs marketing, glitz, and human interest in today's sports world. But it will always be "still around" whether or not we have these frills.

I definitly agree with Track Fan. One of the reasons I love the sport is that mostly it is not subjective. Who runs fastest,throws furthest,jumps highest/longest. I don't care what the nationality, religion, or sexual orintation of the atheletes are. I just want to see good performances and good competition. To tar Bud Greenspan with the "network" brush is a bit unfair however. He deals with "after the fact" competitions. I do object to the "up close and personal" crap which seems endemic. I know, we have to cater to the "soccer moms". Thats BS. The families of female athelets are supportive and go to the meets, football matches (in the world sense), baskeball & vollyball matches. It is just US TV which propogates this crap. Like most of corporate US, they suppose that we are all terminaly stupid. End of sceed.
