The planned fs theory occurred to us in the stands after it happened, and some of us are miffed at the Aries Merritt dns.
For sure, a big, big part of the Pick-N-Win game is using all the information you can muster in an attempt to avoid picking athletes who don't show up.
A very unfortunate part of high-level T&F. I don't know much about the ball sports, but I don't think this happens much in the NFL, MLB, or even the PGA.

China's biggest track star, Liu Xiang of China, lined up for the 110 hurdles, but flinched early and was disqualified for a false start, turning his trip to America into a nonevent. He scratched from last weekend's meet in New York with a sore hamstring and was apparently well enough to run Sunday, but didn't get his chance.
Asked what happened on the start, he said "nothing happened."
"I didn't even realize I had the false start," Liu said.

Make that three votes for suspected Chinese false start conspiracy.

At one point i thought he had withdrawn. Was he forced back into the race? If so, then i could see an intentional false start being likely. Will there be a penalty if it is deemed a no effort to compete appearance? And if so what about the athletes that came to PRE in apparently bad shape? Possibly no speed work at all before this meet for many of these athletes? Is the incentive for athlete to do well high enough at this meet?

Not that I find anything inherently wrong with the tactic, but it just seems far to convenient.
Now, let the arrows being to fly.;ops:

Not sure if this was on TV, but after the first false start, Liu was rubbing his hamstring a lot while walking back to the blocks for the re-start. No one expected him to start today and it was such a pleasant surprise, but he obviously didn't feel right after the first false start and perhaps intentionally false-started rather than claim injury......perhaps he also was able to pick up his appearance fee that way. I don't think anyone can blame him for not running if he didn't feel 100%, and it was a bit coolish today as well.

Wow, was that obvious and transparent -- Shi jumps, then Liu jumps. No worries. Relief plastered on Liu's face.
