  • NCAA Road Trip!!!! (stat-geek division)

So tomorrow morning Thelma & Louise (err, gh & dj) head off for Des Moines for the NCAA.

But as Cunard Lines used to say, getting there is half the fun, so this is an occassion to fill in some holes in the States spreadsheet, so tomorrow morning dj (who began his trip in Pennsylvania and flew into California on his way to Oregon for Pre) will fly from Eugene to Denver. Meanwhile, gh will fly from San Francisco to Denver.

We'll grab a quick beer in Denver (41-minute connection; can't do more than a few) and puddle-jump to Fargo, North Dakota. Have a beer, then zip across the Red River to Moorhead, Minnesota (and have a beer, of course).

Then down 29 through South Dakota (with a beer) and overnight in Omaha, Nebraska (with a beer). Next morning (yeah, we've blown off the first day of NCs, which is all prelims anyway) continue south to Kansas (where a beer likely to be problematic?), then exit stage-left through Missouri (beer) before finally landing in Iowa.

Some people just have pins in their map for every state they've visited, but a good track geek has a much more detailed Excel layout. Gotta have columns for things like

•A--been there (some will accept an airport stop as OK, so long as you get off the plane and go outside the terminal)

    •B--actually stayed there

•C--(important one) saw a track meet there

•D--(really important one) had a beer there

•E--(really-really important one) had sex there

dj and I will be working quite hard on column D, but we'll probably skip E

In case you two love birds change your mind on E, no pictures are necessary . . .

I like the way you travel!

When you get to Kansas/Missouri, try a Boulevard beer, especially their Pale Ale or the Wheat. Ever since I gained some Kansas City in-laws back in the mid-1990s, Boulevard has been one of my very favorite breweries.

If I ever miss a day of a track meet just so that I can set foot or drink a beer in a new state, please shoot me.

If I thought I were missing a real track meet I might even hand you a gun. I no longer consider the sans-finals first day of the NCAA to be much of a meet. Good case in point, the heats of the men's 400. Here's the setup:

so 4 of the 5 races have only 5 people in them, and two of those have an empty lane in the middle for god knows what reason.

only 2 qualify out of each race, leaving a massive 6 to be chosen on time, so you have no idea about a lot of the finalists until the final heat is over.

If you're gonna have Regionals and establish a pecking order for entry into the meet, I'd certainly like to think that's a good enough reason to have full lanes and a proper Q system. If you have these 26 guys, two heats of 6, two of 7. I'd Q 4, but at least 3+4 is an improvement over 2+6 with so many empty lanes.

Wait a minute, there is, oh, yeah, you an DJ don't do multis. I guess with no metric marks available at NCAA meets anymore, you can't follow them anyway. Nevermind

For counting a state, feet on the ground is a must, but leaving the terminal, not so much. Hell, if you leave the terminal at St Louis, you are totally surrounded by Missouri.

That beer-track combo looks damn fine to me. My Brussels GL Friday + Sat-Sun on the ales in Brugge last year will go down as one of the great weekends of my life...

That Boulevard Brewery looks like it has an excellent range. Ratebeer.com points to their Saison and Dounble-Wide IPA as real winners (if available)...

That's probably dependent on Column D!

I mentioned previously on this forum that I have photographed every county and parish courthouse in all 50 states so I encourage GH in his odyssey to set foot in every state. Fifty-five years ago, my bride and I ambitiously started to fill in Column E. Sadly, we only got through about half the list. .

This thread gives me an idea for another project. A quick review determined I have worked track meets in 32 states and DC. I need someone to invite me to work a meet in HI, AK, NV, UT, MT, WY, ND, MI, VA, WV, MD, NJ, DE, CT, RI, VT, NH, ME.

Maybe you and dj can fill a couple of those empty lanes.

                        GH and DJ's Great Adventure

                        gh and dj,

                        Enjoy the drive.

I wiill see you when you get here.

I agree with Lee - Boulevard is good beer. I had a few this evening.

Now, why are there empty lanes?

The NCAA had decided that lanes 1 and 2 will not be used in qualifying in the 200 and 400.

That means that lanes 3-8 are available for use and the random selection must be across all available lanes. In races with only 5 people, that means empty lanes.

Said lanes aren't good/fair enough for heats, but are for finals?

There are two great brewpubs in downtown Des Moines. The Raccoon River Brewpub is on 10th St. near the Hotel Ft. Des Moines. The Court Ave Brewpub is(guess where?) between 3rd Ave and 4th St. The Topping Pale Ale at Court Ave is exceptional.

For all things UK and Ireland, there's the Royal Mile on 4th St. Extensive offering of libations from the northern islands.

Wow, that's even more impressive than Bret Bloomquist's uncle: his goal was to urinate in every one of Texas' 254 county courthouses. I can't remember if he ever completed his mission.
