  • mDecathlon: Ashton Eaton (Oregon) 8055 CL

Very good battle here; the PV tightened things up, although Addy is pretty good on the throws (but weak on the 1500)

    1 Jangy Addy 6757 10.87 7.31m 15.31m 1.96m 48.52 13.74 47.06m 4.30m
    2 Ashton Eaton 6683 10.64 7.68m 12.79m 1.96m 47.25 14.27 39.96m 4.60m
    3 Gonzalo Barriolhet 6618 11.22 7.12m 13.45m 2.02m 50.61 14.11 43.12m 5.20m

We could have three over 8000, despite the headwinds in the first two events.

The jav results just came up and Barriolhet did not do as well as projected, but Eaton far exceeded his projection.

To break 8000 will require (1500m times):
        Addy 4.50.6 or better
        Eaton 4.41.6 or better
        Barriolhet 4.35.8 or better

Eaton won it with 8055 if my addition is correct. What a fantastic job and what a prospect!

Hats off to Eaton for the big 15 to win it. Addy garners 8 pts for the Big Orange. Gonzo almost breaks 8000.

Michael Ayers of Tennessee, the #2 natural frosh finisher, seems destined to compete for UT. Our school's landmark building is Ayers Hall. Ayers is from Brentwood, Tennessee's Ravenwood High.

We could have three over 8000, despite the headwinds in the first two events.
A little disappointing that Addy could not get more than 1200 points for the last two events and was over 6000 after seven events. Was his JT was almost 200 points below his SP/DT. I knew that he as not great at the 1500, but he will need to bring that up a bit to compete at the next level (he did run 48.52 for the 400 so his 'other 1100m' is being run at 6:12 pace per mile), although some top guys also do 5:00 for 1500.

On a rather sad note, Kilmartin has never succeeded at the Decathlon to the extent anticipated based on his HS marks.

Kilmartin did just fine under my rubric. At the risk of painting with two broad a brush, I usually take the stance that most HS multi-event stars (men more than women) are good as preps because they're usually good all-around athletes, who don't have one really great skill for an individual event, which the great internationals do. And they tend to have good technical coaching and are perhaps over-coached a little. So what you get is a far more finished product than in individual events.

Perhaps but don't you think with his HJ and LJ ability and a 5.30 PV in HS, there was a potential 5.80 vaulter?

I've always heard Kilmartin has the shittiest attitude and is uncoachable. That may have a lot to do with his lack of progression.
