I assume these times have been misattributed:

1 Lisa Koll SO Iowa State 32:44.95 10
    2 Danette Doetzel JR Providence 33:44.23 8

    Who was the real winner?

Koll had 20m on the field after 2 laps, 40m after 3 (not making that up)... weather was just fine (low 70s, no humidity), but everybody else was doing a shuffle while she decided to run

I was wondering when that would happen! The field doing the fun-run thing and someone decides to actually run. Good for her!

I've seen plenty of races where someone makes an early move like that, takes a big lead over the pack, and eventually pays the price. In this case, it just didn't happen that way. She knew what she was doing and by the end of the race, she was almost a lap ahead of second place. But that isn't always the case when it looks as if everyone else is doing the fun-run thing and someone decides to actually run.

Koll was in a different league and everyone else in the pack knew that was the case. Look at the qualifying times going in . The rest knew that they would be running for second unless they went with Koll, in which case they would be running to finish.

This was the next highest qualifier to Koll's big negative-split 32:11 and she was a DNF:

10 Diane Nukuri SR Iowa 33:17.01

Koll vs. Kipyego would have been nice!

That Kipyego did not run this race (i.e., Koll was going to be tough competition with 5000s on both sides and possible warm weather) is another indication that the other gals were not in the same league.
