  • m1500 prelims - what happened?

What happened in heat 1? Apparently a fall? Two slow times advanced to finals on slow times, I can only assume such. Didn't Darren Brown take a nasty tumble in indoor champs mile also? Or was that another Texas runner?

Maybe it's the age-old story... fall down, cry, get advanced
    Or maybe not.

That would really suck if true. The interesting thing is no one was DQed for causing the apparent fall. So, if someone has a case for being advanced to finals by being impeded or knocked down, then shouldn't the impeder or knocker downer (ya like that?) be disqualified?

We're now going to 1000ths of a second for advancing based on time?? I had no idea. I get, for 3/1000ths, 2.18 cm at 55sec/400m pace, or 55/64ths of an inch.

That's been done by the IAAF, USATF, and NCAA for quite a few years. Nothing new about the procedure.

              From the Texas website:

Nobody was more affected by the bumping than senior Darren Brown. He was near the front of the pack coming through the second lap, but was knocked to the track with about 500 meters to go. As a result of the fall, he finished 13th in heat one with a time of 4:08.32.

The Texas coaches filed a protest claiming that Brown was impeded and not given a fair opportunity to qualify for the finals. The meet referee reviewed the protest and ruled that Brown would be reinstated, adding him to Saturday’s final.

“We were able to protest to the referee that Darren did not get a fair chance to participate in this championship,” explained (Texas head coach Bubba) Thornton. “The meet referee agreed with our protest and added Darren to the final.”

Thanks for that Walt. I assume you are on-scene? Can you tell us how many fell and who fell? The reason I'm asking is because the kid from my alma mater (winthrop) Matt Elliot was well out of it, but i dont know if that's because he ran like crap or got caught up in it.

Didn'y know that, but I guess you have to do it somehow.

Thursday marked the last day of competition for a number of Ducks, and none suffered more heartbreak in not advancing than sophomore A.J. Acosta. The Oceanside, Calif., native almost fell on lap 2 before recovering to finish eighth in the faster semifinal heat. But his time of 3:43.859 was .003 slower than Notre Dame’s Kurt Benninger, who ran 3:43.856 in the first heat to gain the 12th and last entry into Saturday’s final.

Is that your conclusion or theirs? Since he was not within 1/1000th (3 of those little buggers), I am not at all certain that he is in.

There is definitely room on the track. Think Oregon has grounds to appeal.
