I think it was the quality of athletes. Over the past few years you there were women who could clear heights over 14-10. The quality is different.

The conditions must have indeed been awful because the women's PV was even worse.

On the other hand, in big international meets in big stadiums the wind is often exactly like that, or so they tell me. So it's good preparation for that.

Great question. The answer is 1979, when Nat Page won the HJ at 7-4 1/2 and Paul Pilla won the PV in 17-4 1/4. (Yes, I looked that up--I didn't thnk it was being asked as a trivia question.)

I don't have past results handy, but this looks like the poorest quality NCAA vault final in years.

Nasty headwind: poor quality marks, but hard to attribute any lack of performance to the athletes themselves.

UCLA Freshman Johnny Quinn told the UCLA site:
On the weather conditions
"This was just an awful wind to vault in. I've never seen it like this during a competition. Normally you can move the pit, but the wind was swirling so whichever direction you decided to vault down, the wind would be all over the place. You can't fix that.... I don't like to blame the wind, but it's very frustrating to compete in wind like we had today."

At its current rate of progression the PV will be won at 15 feet in the year 2020.

This event sure upset the formcharts. It looks like only 2 of the 8 placers (Wallace and Caldwell) were predicted to place.
