  • NCAA hurdles double?

Raasin McIntosh (Texas) is currently the NCAA list leader in both the 100 and 400 hurdles, and I'm pretty sure the 13.12 and 12.90 that she has run recently are not flukes -- I think she has a realistic shot at winning both at the nationals. Does anyone out there know who was the last person (men or women) to pull off this double at NCAA? And when? And for those serious stat geeks out there, who was the last person to lead both lists?

The only man ever to do it was Jerry Tarr (Oregon) in '62.

No woman has ever done it. Closest are Maria Usifo (Texas Southern) in '86 and Joanna Hayes (UCLA) in '99. Each won the long race and was 3rd in the short.

Getting past Lolo Jones and Lashinda Demus will be tough, not to mention the other good women hurdlers.

By "realistic shot," I only meant just that -- a shot. Beating that bunch, if she can pull it off, would be a magnificent accomplishment -- especially considering that, just a few weeks ago, she wasn't even considered the best on her team at the short race. I'm certainly not offering up any Namath-like guarantees.

But I'm still sticking to my prediction of a 3:25 4x4 for her and her teammates. :-)

Yeah I thought it was pretty cool how the Texas 4x4 ran faster at Nationals then the winning time at indoor Worlds.

Randy Cox owns the Heptagonal Games meet records in both events: 13.91 and 50.16. Not that these are going to win a national titles, but I think their both pretty decent times nonetheless.

Yeah, but Texas got to use runners from two countries, unlike those at Worlds.

Such a double will be brutal, but not impossible. As Luke Skywalker said, "It's not impossible, I used to bulls-eye wamprats back home."

Here's the schedule a doubler would face:

                Wednesday
                12:05 100H Heats
                7:55 400H Heats

                Thursday
                11:35am 100H Semis
                6:55pm 400H Semis

                Friday
                8:30 400H Final

                Saturday
                7:00 100H Final

Of course, McIntosh is also an integral part of the Horn 4x4 which'll be going for a Collegiate Record. They can probably win without her, but can they set the CR? So assume she skips the 4x4 heats, but if she runs the hurdle final at 7:00 on Saturday night, she also gets to the run the 4x4 final 9:20. Any gas left in the tank?
