  • FYI: 2008 USAT&F Olympic Trials: Athlete "Pending&q

I just found this out and confirmed by USAT&F:

All those athletes that have a "provisional" qualification mark for the trials which is the majority, will be given a "pending" status. So they will not be confirmed to be in the Trials until just over 48 hours before their event!.

I should have looked at the words following the asterisk on the USAT&F's website:

    * - subject to the Qualifying Guidelines, entry process, and declaration process. If the "B" standard is used, only the number of athletes needed to make the event competitive will be included. These athletes must declare, and they may be invited for inclusion only after the close of declarations.

So in my case I have to wait until 12.01am July 2nd, 2008 to find out if I may be invited for inclusion in the competition on July 4th!

Is it just me or does this seem absolutely ridiculous?

I am not sure it is the best, but can't you tell numerically whether you are in or not? The field sizes I am assuming will be filled to the numbers listed. The last minute notice to me really only applies when people in the field size decide to scratch and "extra" spots open up.

As of 11.59pm Sunday night - the entry closing deadline - I was 24th. The desired minimum for my event is "24" and there are several people that have not entered but may on appeal. From reading the USATF website they refer to the number - 24 - as the " desired minimum" # of participants but there seems to be a bit of wiggle room:

This is another passage taken from the USATF's website:

" If the "B" standard is used, only the number of athletes needed to make the event competitive will be included. These athletes must declare, and they may be invited for inclusion only after the close of declarations. The field sizes listed are the desired minimum of participants, and the Games Committee will try to fill the field to the minimum provided there are enough athletes entered and qualified without the quality of competition being affected. The Men's and Women's Track & Field Chairs may alter the field size as necessary.

      What do you think?

I am not a USATF insider so I can't tell you anything with any certainty. Are you still 24th as of today?

I guess "24" is my luck number: I am still 24th. I was born on the 24th. And it has been 24 years since I was last in Eugene chucking my stick albeit an old rules implement.

Roald, I was trying to figure out the first time I saw you compete. For sure at '84 OG. Were on the UK ECup team in '81? WC team in '83? I can't remember, and my programs are buried in the garage. I do remember that the JTing at Zagreb was pretty spectacular. I think it was Michel in the men's at 90m+, and I know that Todorova got the WR in the women's. I missed a bit of the men's winning mark when an idiot stood up in front of me with the winning mark in the air. Had the surreal effect of the implement entering his right ear and exiting the left
