I'm sure many of you caught the Times of London profile of Tom Lancaster, the (former?) Florida State runner from the UK who won the 1500 in Oslo. Lancaster is impressed by the American system, especially the premium it places on competition against all comers.
As I read this, one name flashed through my mind: Alan Webb.
“There's no doubt the [American] collegiate system breeds that competitive edge,” Lancashire said. “In Britain, one of the problems is people settle for being the best in the country when you have to be pushing to compete globally. Maybe, in America, they have that belief that they can take on the best in the world rather than just getting into good positions in the national championships.”
