You must be psychic...I was about to ask this VERY question after thinking about it in a traffic jam yesterday

Now what about Vernicha James ?

Everytime I think of James, I go straight to the following result-
          2002 WJC

          1 5 204 James Vernicha GBR 22.93 (PB) 0.184
          2 4 312 McLaughlin Anneisha JAM 22.94 (PB) 0.178
          3 3 570 Richards Sanya USA 23.09 0.168
          4 6 296 Cal Vincenza ITA 23.25 (NJ) 0.181
          5 7 554 Felix Allyson USA 23.48 0.192

The same year in the 100m
          1 4 576 Williams Lauryn USA 11.33 (PB) 0.195
          2 5 310 Facey Simone JAM 11.43 (PB) 0.165
          3 6 561 Hooker Marshevet USA 11.48 0.167
          4 3 328 Stewart Kerron JAM 11.53 0.163

The above 4 could well be Olympic finalists, if only James and McLaughlin could have developed as well as their Junior peers- Who KNOWS what might have been.

          Interestingly

The Junior American and Junior Jamaican relays consisted of:

1st: Simpson Sherone, Stewart Kerron, McLaughlin Anneisha, Facey Simone
2nd: Williams Lauryn, Williams Ashlee, Solomon Shalonda, Hooker Marshevet

The Jamicans will actually have 2/3rds of that team in Beijing, the Americans will half 1/2.

The transition from Junior to Senior with these kids was obviously handled extremely well. I;d love to know what it can be accredited to, so it could be replicated time and time again. Pet hate- Successful juniors flopping as seniors.

So no pressure on Vernicha then?

While it's tempting to wonder what might have been, what might have been has been and gone. I don't mean that in a bad way, it's just that time and injuries mean Vernicha is starting from a lower training base than other athletes who've kept training and racing.

That result is in the past and although it's an indicator of talent, I don't think you can use it as an indicator of future potential.

Looks like she ran 23.89 (0.2m/s) to finish third.

Well it's faster than what Laura Turner ran last week... :?

Tina Brown won the steeplechase with 9:50, two seconds ahead of Helen Clitheroe.

I don't think 23.89 is that bad after what she's been through...

...however, it's come too late for this season for her by the looks of things

Come on Helen - you should be running sub-9:30 this year, not 9:52. Your better than that!

For me, it's just great to see Abi back and 23.89 isn't too shabby for her first race. Hopefully she'll be running half-a-second faster by the end of the year.
