  • What Are the Top-10 Stories of The Trials?

Certainly the unbelievable sprinting on display in the m/w-100m will be one of the 10-top stories generated from these Trials.

I can imagine that Begley:s 10.000m finish will also make the top-10.

What do you consider top-10 worthy thus far, and which stories do you imagine will have unfolded by the time this championship event concludes?

Men's long jump belongs up there as one of the top stories.

There is a lot of meet left, so I would hesitate to generate this list just yet. But I'll add to it anyways.

One item that has to make the top 10, maybe the top 1, is the overall atmosphere of these Trials here in Eugene. This is my third full OT (84 in LA and 2004 in Sacramento) and there is absolutely no comparison. The venue, the crowds (packed, knowledgeable and LOUD), the support staff, everything that goes into making this Trials an EVENT, not just a meet.

I seriously doubt that this atmosphere can be duplicated anywhere in the US, and would say that USATF should seriously consider making the the permanent home of this meet (unless another US city gets the Olympic Games).

This will be a running (no pun intended) list, to which folks can add their personal top-10 favourites as the championships unfold and, ultimately, draw to an end.

Factoid: Tyson Gay is earning 2M-USD in sponsorship money from adidas, Omega, and Sega ahead of Beijing.

My heart always breaks when I see the 4th placers who came so close - so far Gigi Johnson, Demus and Phillips.

Amy Yoder-Begley getting 3rd in the 10,000 and putting the pedal to the metal to get the A standard.

Anyone who watched the 800 would agree...and not just because of the local angle. A fantastic race for many reasons.

                  Related to the 800...

Wheating. You just don't go from a nobody 1.50 guy (not even good by his own team's historical standards) with only 3 yrs of running experience behind you, to a 1.45flat guy making an Olympic Team as a college soph.

That was SO unforgettable the night it happens, but... it's already fading

The high-schoolers, esp the 10th grader girl in the 800.

                        The 800 final, natcherly.

The camaraderie and sportsmanship. Never met a distance runner I didn't like (well, there's a guy on Letsrun.....). Friendly competition. Mainly.

                        Hazel.
                        Begley.
                        Nick.
                        Bernard (a total gentleman ).
                        Shalane.
                        the Three Oregonteers!
Lord, where can we draw the line at such a great meet?

Tim Layden on the men's 800:
"I've been thinking for two days now if I've seen a more thrilling track race. Haven't been able to think of one yet. Maybe Carl Lewis' 4X100 anchor leg in Barcelona. Maybe Haile Gebrselassie and Paul Tergat in Sydney in 2000. But Monday's 800 is on the short list."

                            Hasay making the 1500 final.
Greer not making the JT final.

                              Final day. Last lap.

Who will make the cut (whether that:s a good or bad thing)? Gay and Goucher make the list.

Indy Star has its own list:
