Men- the men 100m record will definitely go. With the big three -Gay ,Bolt, Powell, and outsiders like Adkins and Dix in the field. Plus the temperature,I'd say 80% chance the WR goes. Men 4x1 with smooth changes(unlikely) record goes. 400m nah, 200m nah. The longer distances are next to impossible with the expected air quality.

        Women-PV, no other.

If there's anything we can bank on, it's that no one can predict when WRs will happen. If the final is into any wind at all, there will be next to no chance. And if they have a 2.1 tailwind, the time won't matter... But, if they're lucky enough to have a 1.0 to 1.9 type tail wind, watch out...

Are you seriously suggesting that the men's and Women's 400m hurdles records could go???
I don't see any possibility of the w400H going down, but I do believe the m400H is within the realm of possibility.

If Kerron Clement gets his technique sorted out for an entire race, and there have been flashes of it, he has the speed to take down Kevin Young's venerable record.

To put it simple, if conditions are perfect, with the competition in thef the field, the record will fall.

Same goes for the 110H. with that field and conditions, I think the record will fall.

There were no World Records at London in 1948.

Has there ever been an Olympics with air quality as bad as Beijing?

I predict more WRs in Europe and elsewhere AFTER Beijing than at the Games.

The Games are for gold. The aftertour is for green!

I agree with flump on the 400h, both men's and women's. Young buried that sucker in MJ territory, and with the injuries (Rawlinson & Pechonkina out) and the OT accident (Demus 4th), the pickings are pretty slim. I don't think there will be a sub 53, and 54.xx may well win the race.

I agree with the tenor of the board that no distance race record will go, with the possible exception of wSt (realatively new event, maybe short enough that the competitors can breath).

I guess I agree with Marlow (and his 3rd handle?) that anything not on the list won't happen.

I am not sure what the w400h is doing in there. With the men, there is always the possibility that Clement will run the perfect race technically. However, his 45.47 is not a sterling mark.

my picks for best chance at world records in beijing would be the mens and womens 4 x 100 relays, in the womens race their were a lot of great marks in the jamaican (probably the olympic favorite vcb ran a good time, but only got 4th) and usa trials that indicate if they dont mess up the handoffs east germany's long standing record could be in jeopardy.

in the mens 4 x 100 jamaica with its big 2 bolt and powell joined by sub 10 runner nesta carter and probably frater look to be a big threat to the record and the usa with an always powerful team with lots of depth should push jamaica again the handoffs are crucial.

                            the womens 4 x 100 is a tossup.
the mens 4 x100 jaimaca is a slight favorite
