Who would win?

What current distance runner (specializes in 1500m or longer) is the fastest in the final 100m.

(i.e. off an incredibly slow pace what distance runner is the fastest in the final straight).

Obviously the answer changes as the pace increases, but lets say they jogged till the final straight.

Who haas the fastest pure top end speed.

I haven't seen enough of the top guys race or train in person to answer this myself. But coming into a Olympic year it may be relavent (at least in prelims).

If they're going to jog for 1400 meters and sprint for the last 100, Justin Gatlin should enter the race :-D

Note that that is why I specified that we should only consider people who specialize in the 1500m or longer.

In the past the answer has always seems to have been, whatever young Kenyan has just emerged. They seem to arrive with withering kicks and then slowly lose them as they train to sustain higher paces.

I don't know about Cova, who was a 10000 specialist, but at 1500, how about Ivan Heshko ?

Funny that you mentioned Ivan Heshko. I was thinking the same thing: He can hang with a decent pace (pb of 3'32"01 in 2003) and as we saw over the summer on the European circuit (ie Ostrava, Athens-Trikala meets) he can motor the last 200-250m. It's also the kick which got him the bronze in Paris. Also the 1'45" 800m in Dortmund after Ostrava proves he's got some good pure speed.

Also trying to think if any of the Spaniards might be as quick...
