                    i assume his given birthname was "Thomas",so it would be your own personal preference whether you spell his(non-legal) nickname as "Tommy" or "Tommie"

                    unless of course his given birthname was "Tommie"...

                      In the small profiles that T&FN used to run in the '60s (before I was on board) I think you'll find full names being used (James Randel Matson). These were generally prepped from forms that we had athletes fill out that asked for formal name. So, if we can trust that as gospel, his name as he gave it to us in '65 is Tommie C. Smith (suspecting the C is just an initial).
