  • Season Ending Injuries

I'm a distance runner who just got my season ended by a stress fracture in the arch of my foot. Also, I won't be running the freshman year of cross country at my college because I'm not allowed to run for at least four months. I was just wondering if anyone else out there also has a season ending story like this just to let me know I'm not the only one out there.

Tim: I competed in the 70's and 80's and was very prone to injury. My commiserations, it's damn frustrating. The most important things are to get good medical advice and listen to it. Keep fit on the bike or pool and don't try to come back too quickly otherwise you'll re-injure yourself. It's very frustrating but be patient and start planning next years training and racing schedule, forget about this year. When you can run again take it easy to start with, it's natural to push it and try to make up for lost time but that can also result in more injuries. Good luck.

I would, of course, listen to your doctor before some on-line hack like myself, but in purely general terms, 4 months of no running seems a bit extreme to me.

Did you go to a sports specialist? While I have the upmost respect for the average sawbones, they rarely know about sport-specific injuries.

I've never had a stress fracture, so have no idea if four months is a long time or not, but one thing any serious athlete should do in the case of major injury is make sure they see a sports-medicine physician, not just your family doctor (in case that's what you did).

Your doctor can be one of the best in the world, but unless he/she understands the world of sports, the advice given will probably be incredibly conservative. "That hurts? Stop doing it."

Yeah...i went to a orthopaedic doctor who also specializes in foot and ankle injuries. I wouldn't go as far as saying that he's a sports doctor, but he's actually pretty knowledgable about running and sports in general. Believe me, I know about just trusting any old doctor, they told me that I had just pulled ligaments in my foot. little bit of a difference, wouldn't you say???
