  • Dixon Farmer recovering from blood clot

Last week I learned that Dixon Farmer, one-time NCAA 440H champion and a Southern California coaching legend, was hospitalized. To glean details, I wrote his alma mater, Occidental College.

    Here's a note I got today:

Dixon did have a blood clot on his lung and had been in the hospital since last Tuesday. He's due to return home on Tuesday and all indications are that he'll soon be back to being 100%. He went into the hospital when he had trouble breathing and couldn't even walk a block, but all is now looking good, or at least much better.

    Thanks,

I competed in high school in the same general part of SoCal, and at about the same time, as Dixon Farmer. He had a bigger-than-life reputation for daunting performances in a whole fist-full of disciplines: Just the mention of his name was enough to silence a room of less-gifted young tracksters like me.

I wish him a complete and speedy recovery.
