In regards to the women's TJ, it's kind of confusing really. I don't think it's the coaching so much as our men TJ'ers have been relatively successful; I think it's not knowing how to coach and progress women in technical/power events in general (thus the problems with the Jav, shot and related events). Take out Trafton-Brown, and Chaunte Lowe and things get worse. Even Yuliana Perez who came over with 47 foot credentials as a youth/junior from Cuba, got coaching here and went downhill.

In regards to Ke'Nyia Richardson, she was prep AOY going 45' 6" windy, and having numerous jumps over 13.50 windy and legal. She was also Pan Am Jr. gold medalist at 13.50+ over Kimberly Williams. But she was named AOY because she also went 13.32 (8.35i) and 6.36 LJ ranking all time top ten in all 3 (4) events. In college she hasn't run under 14, nor jumped over 6.15, indicating a power/speed loss of some sort. She, Daniels, McClain and Spears were the top preps in the TJ over the past 15 years and probably what should've been the future of the event in the U.S. I believe all were world ranked as juniors and only McClain has made even a tiny dent at the next level.

thats the big question though, what exactly happens during the ncaa level that causes lose of speed and regression in an event they've dominated since aau days.

6% different between HS nationals and a Gold medal jump in a technique event. Surely you are joking. I do not see a lot of HS girls vaulting 4.76, running 8:40 for 3000m, SPing 19+m, etc.

Good for McLain jumping 47' into a slight breeze today. She lost by almost a foot , but this is a step (and hop and jump) in the right direction.

if you had asked me 6 years ago i would have thought both mccalin and daniels would be dominate in this event on the world scene. i can't for the life of me figure out what happens to female jumpers while in college that causes such a steep plateau after they go pro/graduate.

USA women's TJ could change all in one day at this year Pre-Classic.
All they have to do is compete well :shock:
Also this is the one chance they have if they want to get invited to the Euro meets.
4 of the women in this competition have easily passed the USA wTJ record.

It's still a major championship medal irregardless considering Jaack's statement he couldn't recall any finalist in the listed weakest events.

Ha! Clive Terralong won the 800m gold medal in World Indoor and another indoor medal that did not matter was Lisa Barber winning 60m gold and I think even Candice Davis won silver in 60 H. Indoor is an activity not a sport.

So, a bronze in the the World Indoor w TJ must have been based on top athlete entrants? Honestly?

Tiombe Hurd won a '01 World Indoor bronze in the TJ.

Hurd's American mark has been bettered more than 850 times by athletes outside the U.S., according to the website alltime-athletics.com. In no other event has the U.S. been less competitive globally.

I had not forgotten Sheila Hudson. I believe she ranked as high as 10th in the world in the T &FN rankings. If only the TJ had weight classes...

the worst american event is probably the ladies shot put, why? with an olympic champion in the discus and lots of 70m hammer throwers, the girls just don't want to do the shot in any great numbers in the US, the coaching expertise is everywhere in the US, the level of male shotputters with 6 active throwers over 71 feet right now has never being higher.

Has it been 12 years since Shiela jumped? By grand coincidence I happened to be the Pit Judge for two/three of her American records, Atlanta, New Orleans and someplace else, maybe Sacramento.
She was undoubtably the most precise, compact, technically correct TJer, male or female, I ever watched. She got the most out of her diminutive frame and looked oh so good doing it... nothing in the pit to mark except two perfectly aligned size five footprints..
As if talent and looks were not enough, she rivaled JJK for "niceness".
If it sounds like I am a Shelia Hudson fan, Yep.
