  • El G To Double In Athens

Just in case there was any doubt in anybody's mind, Hicham El Guerrouj's agent, Laurent Boquillet, has confirmed to T&FN that he (El G, not LB!) will be going for a 15/5 double at the OG.

The by-day setup (1-3-5, 6-9) is the same as Paris, but there's a bit less sleep available on the night after the 1500 final and the 5K heats the next day.

    Saturday: 1500 heats 19:45
    Monday: 1500 semis 21:20
    Wednesday: 1500 final 23:25 (!!)
    Thursday: 5000 heats 20:30
    Saturday: 5000 final 21:10

That is great to hear about El G going for the double. Hopefully with Bekele running again that will be a superb matchup.

Hey at least it won't be too hot, he shouldn't have to worry about dehydration. Plus he can sleep all day on Thursday as the 5k heats don't start until 8:30pm.

If Bekele doubles back from the 10 and Cherono from the steeple, it could be one to remember.

Unfortunately, the 5K heats are the day after the steeple final.

Is the schedule set up so that someone could double in the 800/1500?

Do you miss the days when the 1500 fell on the last day of the Games?

            15/8 double is workable.

            Wednesday: 800 heats 21:15
            Thursday; 800 semis 21:15
            Saturday: 800 final 20:50

But don't expect a double from Krummenacker, what with the 800 being his focus; can't imagine he'd want to sacrifice his chances there by burning energy in the 1500s. Note that the events are reversed in Sacto, so he can go into the 1500 after having made the 800 team and be as aggressive as he wants.

But if you're right about what he ought to do in Athens (and I think you are), then I'd assume he'll probably run the 1500m in Sacto only if by some accident he does NOT make the 800 team. I don't know why he'd mess around with the 1500 trials if he doesn't intend to run that event in Athens. If he wasnts to run some 1500's, I'm sure there are places he can get paid for doing it.

Re: El G To Double In Athens

Cuz DK told T&FN just recently "we couldn't have asked for a better schedule" (at the OT) "so it's a real possibility"

Now if we could just convince HG to run a 5k/10k double then the 5k would be unbelievable (as if it already isn't shaping up that way).

Has Kenya released Cherono to compete? I was under the impression that they haven't.
