Far and away the men's 400m? Or not?

Closely followed by the 400mH... but given "outsiders" sneak in much often there (Sanchez, Matete, Schmidt, Akii-Bua), it's fair to say 400m flat...12 fastest men all-time (and 70 fastest times) over that distance...

That was my take as well when considering the 400mH...

Every gold in the men's 400 since 1976 games (not counting '80 boycott) and last time U.S. didn't get at least 2 out of the 3 medals was 1964 where we still got the gold (again, not counting '80 boycott). Pretty dominating.

Is the implication of "strongest" meant to be interchangeable with "dominant"? If so, the USA doesn:t hold a grasp on this one any longer. It would have lost the first two spots in the Olympics had it not been for a DQ. It also lost the WR. I:d stick with the 400m, as no one has really had an opportunity to sneak in past the Americans save one or two odd occasions over the past four years - and the same during the Johnson era - which followed the Reynolds/Everett/Lewis/Watts ones.

there are different ways to look at a countries strength in events, current strength, all time strength, frontline strength (having a few super athletes in an event) top 10 strength (the top 10+ in the mens 400 all time list are all americans), the depth strength of a country, personally i like the top 100 all time list, for one thing tilastopaja does the work for me and an athlete who makes the top 100 in an event has entered world class
