I thought you lot would find this interesting.
There is a Jamaican fellow who does some temp work with me from time to time. He's been with me now for the past week and it's the first I've seen of him since May.
I asked him about Usain Bolt and his Olympic performance.
He told me, enthusiastically, how the whole island is celebrating his Olympic races. "To us, he is a real life superman!" He said that now, children all over are doing whatever they can to get themselves a pair of running shoes. They all want to run for their schools, boys and girls both want to be the next Usain.
He told me not to be surprised if Bolt wasn't even in the next Olympics because he thinks there are so many kids that are so much faster than him, but haven't applied themselves.
Apparently, either these kids get caught up with the opposite sex or the ganja (his words). He told me his own son was a top distance runner, but was too interested in girls.
I dunno if I buy the idea f Bolt not being at the next Olympics, but I understand what it is he's saying about the positive effect it's had on everyone.
It will be fun to see what happens there over the next few years.
