For those not familiar with this race, it's point-to-point and slightly downhill.

Does that mean it can't count for record purposes (i.e., say a British road mile record) tandfman?

Are road mile records officially recognized in the UK? I don't think they are in the US.

I think so - in Paula Radcliffe's autobiography, Mark Butler and co have compiled an appendix featuring all of her results and they accredited her 1997 wins at the Fifth Avenue Mile as a UK best.

'Best' is not the same as 'record'.

Let's cut to the chase - I think what AthleticsInBritain was asking was: "is this the fastest time ever run by a British woman for a road mile (i.e. a UK best)" in which case, it would seem that it is.

I suppose he can tell us what he meant, but I really thought he was asking a question about record recognition.

Close but no cigar Jon!

Actually, what I really wanted to know was whether the downhill gradient was too steep to allow results to stand for record purposes, as it can do for marathons?

I was also thinking that Lisa's time had to be the fastest on the road by a British woman and that Pattie Sue Plummer's 4:16.6 had to be one of the fastest by any woman ever and a very good mark in relation to Masterkova's 4:12 track record.

By the way, as far as I know, UKA don't recognise road Mile records/bests, rather that people keep lists of "Bests", like the wonderful gbrathletics.com.

The race has a net elevation loss of 9.2m (5.7m/km), nearly six times the allowable elevation loss for road racing records for standard distances which is just 1m/km.
