  • Paris GL Meet in Trouble?

L'Equipe is reporting today that the Gaz de France is not renewing its sponsorship of the Paris Golden League meet. Will they be able to find a replacement? I hope so.

You're on fire today, gh. You owe me a new keyboard. I just spat out half my cup of tea over it after reading that.

You need Monet to buy Degas to make the Van Gough

That was a work of art, sir--of the neo-surrealist-obtuse-expressionist style.

I'm wondering how many meets (both domestic and international) are suddenly going to be real casualties because of a massive drying up of sponsorship money in these trying times.

One thing the Paris meet has going for it, at least, is that they can show sponsors monster attendance figures. (good luck for U.S. meets on that score)

I think it is better to invest in the product rather than dry up with the times.

We were just discussing that at my club's board meeting last night (in relation to road races). The feeling was that most events would have a harder time getting sponsorships, but that participation should continue to increase, as running is an inexpensive way to relieve stress.

My guess is that participation will decrease, as adult recreational sports require leisure time and/or disposable income.

it'll be interesting to see if any marathon, big or little loses a sponsor, or whether the entry fees just get bigger...

an aside note, do people realize how much it costs to get to eugene from the east coast...

with the monopolization of national events there ad infinitum, cost will drive some east coasters to not go again....

Running a quick plug-in to the United Airlines site for cheapest 14-day fair currently available. From JFK to Eugene, $310. From JFK to San Francisco, $319. From San Francisco to Eugene, $279.

You explain airline pricing to me!

(11,00 SEK (!) from Stockholm to London Stansted yesterday; 499,00 SEK from Stockholm to Göteborg).

I think it will increase because unemployed people have a lot of leisure time, and both employed and unemployed people will substitute more expensive hobbies (skiing, traveling, etc) with less expensive ones.

Of course, the reality is that the average citizen would fill more leisure opportunity with more quality couch-potato time!
