And Lornah Kiplagat now joined these two as a three-time champion (and she also has a silver from 3 years ago).

I want to say Tergat but can't remember if the course was acceptable or not (might have been slightly downhill or slightly short).
    Wrong. Try again.[/quote:26snbgha]

I looked up the answer after I posted, so I'll excuse myself. Good trivia question.

    kenya won team gold in 1st 4 editions & finished 4th that year ( & resumed winning in '97 ) !

they must have sent some rubbish to it in '96

i presume the nairobi taxi-drivers refused to go as 2nd string, so they sent whatever was left ?!

Yeah it's a bit peculiar. Though Africans did take silver and bronze individual medals in that race. Kenya finished fourth in that competition. Maybe they didn't send their top guns.

The answer was Japan in 2005, they finished third. In fact, Japan (silver '02 and '05) and Belgium (bronze '00) are the only non-African teams to medal since the African shutout in 1996 by Italy, Spain and Japan.

You are right on 1) and 3)!

    1. Baldini won in 1996, also leading the Italians to the team title. Since then it has been a steady stream of Kenyans with Tanzania, Eritrea and Ethiopia mixed in there.

    3) Loroupe is the only one to win three consecutive titles, taking 1997-1999. Radcliffe won in 2000, 2001 and 2003.
