I must live in a parallel universe. I attended the Boston Indoor Games yesterday, and I was pretty excited by the whole thing. Three US All-comers indoor records (men's 600m and 3,000m and women's 5,000m) and one collegiate indoor record (men's 3,000m) were set, plus a performance by Devers that was absolutely amazing, considering how early in the season it came, some terrific vaulting by Dragila, screaming the lower heights, an impressive performance by Jen Toomey, and a few other very good races.
When I picked up the newspapers this morning, and went on line this afternoon, the headlines all dealt with the disappointment that Haile G did not set a world indoor record. Although I knew that they had announced a record attempt, I also knew that there was almost no chance whatseover that he would actually break that record. So I was elated by the records seen, and not at all disappointed by the record not broken.
Unfortunately, the records that I saw were totally ignored by the press that was there. The Globe, NY Times, and AP all had writers there, and they all led with Geb's "failure" and said nothing about any of the records that were actaully set. And even the release put out by USATF this afternoon made no mention of the three soil records, all of which will presumably be ratified officially by USATF itself.
I love my universe. It'a a happy place where the positive achievements in the sport are recognized and celebrated. I just wish I had some company there.
