Well #1 is Bolt, #2 is Powell...
Gay's season consists of :
excellent OT series 9.68w, 9.77
slick 2nd to Bolt in NY
win at Carlson
Not much else (other than almost making the Olympic final)
Thompson's silver in Beijing is backed up with NCAA win and 2 3rds and a 4th in Europe
I'd put Thompson at #3 simply because he achieved as much as was practical given college commitments and won his biggest prize
Gay is #4...
then maybe Dix, N. Carter, Patton, Martina, Frater, Burns

Oh what fun it is to say that the number three is Gay!
[not that there's anything wrong with that!]

as ``backed up'' for a number three ranking. As is, we have the NCAA
and the olympic silver for Thompson vs. the FOT and much better times
for Gay. Considering that Gay's Olympics were ruined by his injury
(and that Powell's choking made it easier for Thompson), I would put
Gay ahead.
In fact, I would not be surprised if, e.g., Dix would also come in ahead
upon closer inspection. (Nor would I be surprised if Thompson remained
4th.)

I would have said:
#1 Bolt (obviously)
#2 Powell
#3 Thompson
#4 Dix
#5 Gay
But that's my own subjective viewpoint without consulting head to heads, etc. Gay may have had his injuries, and any other season would obviously be #2 or #3 behind a season like Bolt's, but you can only go by the results.
I still think he's the 3rd best sprinter in the world behind the Jamaicans regardless of this season's results!
