I have to believe that there are some Greeks who are concerned about the harm that the doping situation has caused their image. Medals are nice, but if they're going to come at the cost of what some will see as a national disgrace, it shouldn't be surprising to see prosecutors stepping in.

Without being 100% sure I think that this "going to jail" thing has been approved as a law only recently (Sep 2008) so it is a completely new situation hopefully from now on. At the same time I anticipate to take a lot of time not only because of the general delays in the Greek court system but on the fact that the athletes in question are now going to fight to death their case since actual jail time is in the horizon (instead of just 2 years out of competing).
As an additional note, remember that the motor bike accident issue for Thanou and Kenteris is pending since 2004 and it is continuously postponed for ridiculous reasons (like the defense lawyer is on vacation in Mykonos!).
