Olsson and Frietag were a little disappointing (I also saw that Frietag only jumped 2.15 a week or so ago)

Re: Holm already over 7'8
Actually, 2.34 in early feb. does not bode well for a good oly performance, I'm betting it has no bearing what so ever on what happens in Athens. I seem to remember a few years ago an American jumped 2.37 in MArch at US champs, and then faioled to make the Olympic team.

Re: Holm already over 7'8
Stefan Holm is not some US collegian who learned to jump at baskets. His long-range plans are intact. In the HJ anyone in Feb is a long shot, but I already have him pencilled in on my Gold picks. Freitag is also top 3. The third comes out of the woodwork - as they always do in an Oly year.

Sorry but your logic defeats me. Of course it's early but a good performance like this is a clear signal that he's in good shape and certainly indicates that barring injury he'll be a medal contender.

Everything is relative. Freitag may have jumped "only" 7-4.5 in Göteborg, but guess what? It's a South African Record!

Re: Holm already over 7'8
Holm is on a mission after his disappointing WC silver. He has been given a lot of support by Swedes (both on and off the field - with several appearances on television shows - including "På Spåret), and is using his bitter loss to Freitag as a springboard to summer 04 success. Holm is coached by his father. Holm is also spirited, a fight-till-you-die athlete, and, according to his camp, on a really tough training regime.
Let us just watch with enthusiasm as he pushes the standards and reaches for new heights.
F4G favorites: Olsson, Klüft, Holm and Bergqvist.

It may be so (actually, he only equalled his own record), but how often do South Africans get a chance to jump indoors ? It's a full 12 cm below his PB.Było smaszno, a jaszmije smukwijne...

You might also ask, "how often do Cubans get a chance to jump indoors?" :-)

Re: Holm already over 7'8
Holm is defintely not a "fly by night" athlete. He has displayed outstanding consistency over the past few years and continues to improve. I'm looking forward to his Arnstadt meet this wknd. If you recall, this is the meet in which he jumped 2.36 last year and by all accounts he simply flew over 2.34 in Goteburg. He also had very narrow misses at 2.37. I think he'll PR this indoor season and will likely have an outstanding outdoor season as well.If you're ever walking down the beach and you see a girl dressed in a bikini made out of seashells, and you pick her up and hold her to your ear, you can hear her scream.

No Herr Mogenburg here. Just a big fan of some of the Germans i.e. Mogenburg and Thranhardt from the 80's. What a decade of quality high jumping! If you're ever walking down the beach and you see a girl dressed in a bikini made out of seashells, and you pick her up and hold her to your ear, you can hear her scream.
