There were some quotes from Rono that I liked, after his incredible binge of fast 5ks in 81, including the WR, in the subsequent issue of T&FN. At the time they were impressive ... not really inspirational per se, but something like

"...rumors that I was drinking, that I had contracted diseases - all false"

    (??)

And something about the mind and body working together - sometimes one or the other not being willing ...

Unfortunately, those years of the mags are packed away right now ... maybe someone who has it handy can be exact.

It would be late 81, the issue where the 13:06.xx WR was reported.

      Here's a few that I've filed away:

Edwin Moses was unbeatable, technically incomparable, oozing confidence in a way that was quite fearsome. Most of us in sport look up to him as the athlete's athlete.
      ---Sebastian Coe

Being a decathlete is like having ten girlfriends. You have to love them all, and you can't afford losing one.
      --Daley Thompson

Seb Coe is a Yorkshireman. So he's a complete bastard and will do well in politics.
      --Daley Thompson

Doctors and scientists said that breaking the four-minute mile was impossible, that one would die in the attempt. Thus, when I got up from the track after collapsing at the finish line, I figured I was dead.
      -- Roger Bannister

I was told over and over again that I would never be successful, that I was not going to be competitive and my high jump technique was simply not going to work. All I could do was shrug and say 'We'll just have to see'.
      --Dick Fosbury

Great quote, but Nietzche borrowed if from Goethe.

A couple more about a baseball guy, who should've run track:

'Cool Papa' Bell was so fast he could get out of bed, turn out the lights across the room, and be back in bed under the covers before the lights went out.
          - Josh Gibson

Once he hit a line drive right past my ear. I turned around and saw the ball hit his ass sliding into second.
-Satchel Paige, on 'Cool Papa' Bell

since the university of texas figured so prominently, and since the longhorns were my favorite team as a boy, let me clear up the quotes from the former sid. what jones ramsey said was: "the only thing more boring than track is field.''

i always liked darrell royal's observation: luck doesn't go around looking for a stumblebum.''

One of my faves, although I'd have to check my resources to get the exact wording, is by Kratochvilova, when hearing Gaby Bussman's criticsm of her 'manly' physique:

"Maybe if Gaby worked as hard with the weights as she did with her tongue she'd produce performances like mine. If she worked as hard as me she may have a different concept of beauty. The women of the west dont work as hard as we do"

I also liked her "it hurts whether you run a 51 or a 48"

Drechsler at the '94 Euro indoors
"The other women seem unable to beat me. It is not motivating."

Gohr, on hearing of Flo Jo's WR in '88
"To run that fast you need to have rockets on your feet"

              Cuthbert on Torrance:
"Nobody on her own team likes her! She's the biggest bitch in track. I'd like to kick Gwen's butt, I swear. If she says one more thing to me, I will"
"If Gaby worked as hard with the weights as she did with her tongue she'd have a different concept of beauty. To get performances like mine, she'd have to sacrifice some of her good looks. The women of the west dont work as hard as we do" JK

And why would that be, you genius Czech?

TFN1988: Similarly, "jets on her feet".

Thank God Torrence made mincemeat of the magician Cuthbert in the Barcelona 200. Nothing gave me greater pleasure in watching the 1992 Olympics..

Jon Drummond, New York Times, 1998-12-26:

''In the back of my mind, there's the fear of breaking the world record and everybody saying I'm dirty. I'm afraid to be successful because I don't want to be considered a bad person.''

So his false start debacle was a subconscious form of self-sabotage? :P

I heard one the other day that I liked a lot: Sports does not build character, it reveals it.
                      "Who's Kidding Who?"

Just to refresh everyone's recollection, Drummond did not false start. The debacle in Paris was caused by an erroneous ruling by the officials. This was well documented by T&FN in 2003.

Lauren Fleshman, following her Road to Eugene 08 1.500m victory:

This is Track Town USA but with the NCAA West Regionals going on I didn’t know how much track people could take.
