  • New World Cup format

    I like it.
The new format, which will be introduced at its next edition in Split, Croatia, in September 2010, will consist of four continental teams, representing Africa, the Americas, Australasia, and Europe, with two athletes per team in each individual event, and three athletes in the 1500m, 3000m, 5000m and 3000m steeplechase. Additionally, only an overall combined men's and women's champion will be crowned.

Then so be it. If we can't get one spot out of two for our region, then we don't belong in the meet. I can't see that happening very often, but when it does, our WestHem brethren and sistren will represent!

Maybe this fits in here somewhere.
I had never heard of the placing format in the throws and horizontal jumps in the planned Youth Olympics.
Two stages of four attempt competitonsto a final. Placing on total distance of both stages, Ties go to best single effort.
I have only been around for 7 2/3 or, if you prefer metric, 7.6667 decades. Has this been done before?

                Sawano - AUSTRALASIA
                ??? for AFR

Looks like the typical mix of superstars, mid-rangers and absolute mysteries.

Africa will be behind the eightball with all the field events, but healped by the bigger distance fields...

That has always been the bane of the WCup, but at least this way, there is a little more flexibility and still a Team format (not that anyone seems to care).

More emphasis on "continental" teams is a bad idea, IMHO. Granted, the US has always been fortunate to have its own team, but I can't see any fans in this country really getting excited about being a part of the Americas team.

It almost seems like the changes are, like those to NCAA Regionals, a poison pill to the thing once and for all.

So they eliminated the US team, and the Euro Cup teams. BFD. Nothing changed beyond that. Smoke and mirrors.

the relays could be fun for the america's teams, usain bolt, asafa powell, tyson gay and the next fastest runner in the america's if they get the stick around okay maybe sub 37 for 4x100?

Do we seriously think the World Cup is targeted at US audiences anyway?? That would be pretty irresponsible on the IAAF's part given how little coverage their events get in the US anyway.

The new team format has some merit, and the notion of teammates coming from such diverse locations is quite a nice niche. Robles & Oliver is a fascinating pairing as will be a distance squad with Kenyans alongside Ethopians. Even the Hooker, Sawano teaming is intriguing from an Aussie perspective...

Which would not be a World Record, right? Explain THAT to Joe 6-Pack!

Just explain that! Not even european fans will settle for a "world best" Americas team runs 36.90 and the wr is 37..10?????
