    4.06 for Saxer
Is she finally back on track?

4.06 won't get in the NCAA meet.

No - but it does represent a reversal of fortunes for a former HS record-holder.

True--she hasn't jumped that high in nearly 3 years. But it's still far from where she should be, based on what she did in HS.

"was reported to have done in HS" seems an odd way to phrase her HSR 14' jump.

            Fr: 13'3.5
            So: 12'8
            Jr: 13'3.75
Sr (so far): 13'3.75i, equalling her collegiate best.

OK, you're right. For some reason I had it in my mind that her HSR was an isolated mark at a small meet not backed up by other performances that year. Checking, I see that I must have been thinking of someone else. Her record was at the Landover indoor meet in March, and she had several other performances that year that were within six inches of it. I'll edit my post. ops:

That was a 13'6. The 14' was at the Dartmouth Relays in January 2005.

OK, your turn to screw up. She did indeed clear 14' at Dartmouth in January 2005, but in March of the same year, she set the HSR of 14'2" at Landover.

This is a mix of metric and imperial, but here are her yearly PRs since HS

Mary Saxer - 14'2i HS - Went to Notre Dame
                    2006 Indoor - 4.05m
                    2006 Outdoor - 12-9.50
                    2007 Indoor - 3.86
                    2007 Outdoor - 12-5.5 (3.80m)
                    2008 Indoor - 3.70m
                    2008 Outdoor - 13-1.5 (4.00m)
                    2009 Indoor - 4.06m

I think it's too early to say she's back. At least she has reversed her trend of getting lower every year. It would be great if she kept improving. Looking through Notre Dame marks from previous years, she also dropped off from being a 19' long jumper to around a 17' one. I don't know how much she was practicing/competed LJ compared to HS, but it seems like there was a loss of athleticism which would explain the drop in PV marks.

So, what happened to her? Any reason why she has had such a disappointing college career? Injury? Burnout? Coaching change?

I don't know, but I would imagine that the coaches at Notre Dame don't drive her as hard as her coach in HS did. Few people are as intense as he is. She's probably more focused on school (Notre Dame isn't easy) and being a well-balanced person.

But that's just my guess. Notre Dame isn't exactly known as a pole vaulting school. The pole vault coach her first few years took the head job at Fresno State, so maybe she is doing better under the new coach.

Apparently Jenny Soceka (U Wis, 5th NCAAs) will not be a 7th - she is redshirting the entire year, reworking her technique; she is picking up a double major to cover the 5th year (she is a pretty good student). She looked pretty good for a new technique but was veering to the side if she did not hit it exactly straight on.
