Did you read the article on the front page about Steve Hooker? In it he says it has been forty years since an Australian won the men's Olympic pole vault gold medal. I think he means the men's 800 meters. As far as I know, Hooker is the only Australian to win the Olympic pole vault.

    You are correct.

It was 40 years since Doubell won in Mexico City.

Of course, there have been a few female gold in the interim (Nunn, Flintoff-King, Freeman).

Hooker was first male field gold since 1948 (John Winter HJ). And only PVer to ever score a medal on the Men's side (Grigorieva won silver in 2000).

Oh, and to answer your actual question - No (but will read it now)...

Having now read the story I'd be very surprised if that is what Hooker actually said.

He's a sufficient student of the sport to know that the 40 years is back to Doubell (who may well have raced against Hooker's dad at some point).

The stuff about potentially jumping in a tuxedo body suit at Millrose is more amusing:

...my media manager Dave Culbert once competed against Mike Powell in Melbourne wearing a body suit made up like a dinner suit complete with bow tie and buttons. Maybe I can borrow that and upstage the officials.

Anyone who remembers Culbert might question how baggy this body suit would look on the more svelte Hooker...
